The Causation Of The Civil War - 874 Words

The argument I will be discussing is what caused the Civil War, the fight over slavery or over states’ rights. Dew is going to be arguing that the South was fighting to protect their right to have slaves. Dew believes this partly due to the commissioners in the Deep South trying to rally people together to fight for the right to protect slaves. Gallagher will be arguing that actually the War was to preserve the Union. Gallagher believes this partly due to the most powerful symbol in the nation, the soldiers of the Civil War. It is possible that one could be right or both or neither could be right. My analysis will consist of me questioning the causation of the Civil War. Dew is a man who strongly believe that the southern secession was to protect slavery. He thought that the Deep South commissioners were against racial equality. The four Deep South states were Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and Georgia; the commissioners were appointed by the governor (Dew, page 210). Therefore, the governor in a way was backing slavery to stay and to even expand it, which the commissioners were trying to do. They were trying to convince every state to fight for the right of slavery including the Border States. A critical point to make is that these commissioners were well-known public figures of the South, which helped to influence people. The commissioners were afraid of three things: racial equality, a race war, and racial amalgamation (Dew, page 212). Essentially, this fueledShow MoreRelatedInterpreting The Consequences And Causations Of The American Civil War1058 Words   |  5 PagesInterpreting the consequences and causations of the American Civil war is a complex and multifarious issue that is defined by two predominant archetypes, the revisionist and fundamentalist viewpoints. Mental Health Practice and Medical Racism †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Mental Health Practice and Medical Racism. Answer: Medical racism Racisms has great effects in the process of offering medical care and hence may influence the healthcare outcomes. This essay will explore ways in which racism impact medical care in terms of structures as well as institutions. It is a general requirement that for a racism to function un the medical sector, there is a need for several healthcare systems to collaborate at a close range (Feagin Bennefield, 2014). Since medical care is an institution just like other institutions, it is affected by cultural and racial differences in a society. In this case, an institution is imposed too many burdens in such a way that some members of one race in the society reaps less medical benefits as compared to the other. For instance, racial differences may lead to disparities in terms of access to health care. In some health studies, there have been reported differences in terms of provision of health care on the basis of racial differences. Literature studies indicate that in some places, there are varied differences in terms of the recommendations made regarding medical treatments. For instance, in the United States, when health insurance was adjusted, the Whites received high chances of getting some treatments like chemo dialysis, bypass surgery, and pneumonia intensive care as compared to the Blacks (Feagin, 2017). On the other hand, women and the Blacks were more likely to receive cardiac catheters when they were suffering from myocardial infarction as compared to males and Whites. Despite the fact that the rate of hospitalizations among the Blacks and Whites due to cardiac problems, it is notable that the type and quality of health care services that they receive are different, based on racial differences (Hardeman et al., 2016). An example is the health care in the United States whereby the Latinos, more so the women cannot afford the medical insurance cover. In other cases, medical care differences are due to the White males dominance in terms of status and affordability while at the same time, the healthcare institutions do not make any efforts to attend to the racial differences in terms of differences in races, culture, and economic status. In some other situations, it is possible for racism in health care without the caregivers' intention. This is common especially in a situation whereby the dominant group unknowingly discriminate the minority groups based on race or gender (Smith, 2015). In individual racisms, it is possible that negative stereotypes, discrimination, and prejudice among others may develop, such that these negative attitudes, cumulatively among the majority groups are directed against the minorities. Thus, some people in the society may tend to believe that there are some biological differences among various races which play a role in terms of social, intellectual as well as health differences. In term of medical experiments, the blacks, who are viewed to be inferior in terms of health and intelligence might be used as experimental subjects without their consent. For instance, James Marion used the Women who were viewed as being inferior as subjects in experiments aimed at getting treatments for vaginal fistula. Moreover, in the search for the treatment for syphilis by the USPHS, the Blacks, who are viewed to be inferior were said that they did not require treatment against syphilis, although they too were suffering from this condition (Katz Warren, 2014). Generally, it is not a common practice to let health care delivery be segregated on the basis of racial differences. Although in some cases, the race might impact the biological differences which in turn impact the nature of treatment response, this should not be the overall basis of healthcare (Bodkin-Andrews Carlson, 2016). When racial differences begin to manifest, there is a high likelihood of some races having poor health status as compared to the dominant races and this may lead to poverty and differences in social classes. Health care providers should be universal and each patient should be handled individually and not on the basis of their race. Generally, medical care should put aside all forms of differences and be provided in a universal manner. For instance, if treatment of some conditions is neglected among a certain race, there might be a high prevalence and widespread of the disease even to the majority of the race within the same community or area. This calls for all medical institutions to collaborate such that the systems are based on the provision of standard and universal care to everyone. Since the outcomes of racial discrimination in most cases result in stressful experiences, more health complications might arise in the communities. Although some racial discrimination may occur unknowingly, it is worth noting that it might result in negative effects in form of quality and quantity of health care on minority groups. Motivational Problems in the Workplace

Workplace stress is a depression resulting from an interaction of a person to his/her work environment leading to an inability to balance work with other aspects of life and attracting systematic building up of a negative response emotionally. Causes of stress, thus referred to as stressors are elements or circumstances leading a person to anticipate a feeling of exceeding psychological and physical demands on ability to comfortably cope up with the situation.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Motivational Problems in the Workplace specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Though difficult to explain a definite cause, stressors mostly are associated with certain occupations like policing where fear of recurring violence, emotional repugnant scene or unstable work shifts constantly create an imbalance in the emotions and thoughts. Besides, it is also associated with physical factors at work place like heat, cold, ex cessive noisy environment and physiological aspects destabilizing body balance such as limited recuperating interval between work shifts. In addition, unrealistic deadlines among other excessive demanding works and personal cognitive factors inclusive of health issues, relationship, and inability to adjust to prevailing climatic order are also associated with stress (Schneider, Chung, Yusko 1993). Stress in practicality is such a complex phenomena and it is very rare for two or more individuals to undergo through it the same way in the work environment. According to arousal motivation theory, each victim seems to display a unique sign for onset of stress and should such an individual remain silent on his/her stress, then the employer may not be in a position to know in order to assist with an alternative solution. Employer may eventually learn of the same only if in the structure of such an organization has confidence oriented systems for reassuring the victims of a comprehensive so lution. As the bucket model theory asserts, stress matures up upon complete drainage of a person’s bank of personal resilience as a result of work conflicts, unfavorable working conditions, and emotionally straining assignments outweighing supportive relationships, interesting works, rest and good health. In order to control disastrous levels of stress, regulators are constantly needed (Schneider, Chung, Yusko, 1993, p.56). Though life is meaningless without challenges, balance between rest and stimulation is necessary.Goodness or bad state of stress is dependent on the victim tolerance and subsequent recovery period. Prolonged depression has serious negative influence in work and life of a person. With time if successfully handled, stress may turn into a monotonous habit ending up stressing the victim. In addition to work environment causes, second job, family problems or physical health may increase levels of depression when combined with work related challenges. As a remed y, at every stage of workforce development, an employer is advisable to set up simple practical strategies to get to know and â€Å"offer solutions to employee’s artificial impairment before it generates into a workplace risk or harm† (Kinicki Kreitner, 2009, p.47).Advertising Looking for research paper on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Tolerance levels for stress is dependent of the interest attached to a work, support from family or work relationships, physical ,and psychological health and the nature of work causing stress. Eventual resilience will vary depending on the period taken to heal as each stress is totally different from another neither do two individuals undergo it the same way. Also, there is the passive aggressive behavior characterized by indirect expression of negative feelings than openly handling them. There is always a clear disconnect between actions and spoken words. Therefore, symptoms of this behavior include procrastination, inefficiency, sullenness, irritability, stubbornness, hostile or cynical attitude, constant complains of in appreciation, and resentments on other people’s views. To reverse this disorder, supportive family members should convince the victim to seek assistance from a therapist besides improving the work environment as noted by the humanistic motivation theory. However, the solution lies on him/her accepting that there is a problem and is ready to accept a solution. To effectively handle the above work place related stress disorders, I would concentrate on establishing a good work place relationship as a security strategy for confidential sharing of work related hiccups with the employer or a trusted staff mate. In addition, I would concentrate on preventive policy of creating informal inter-group meetings where the staff is given an opportunity to share on experiences and encourage each other. I would then research on any pre evidence of a recognizable stressor they knew or ought to have known because of the work nature besides the work environment. Instead of playing blame game, I would then concentrate on addressing these issues and where necessary provide rehabilitation support since prolonged periods of stress may be catastrophic in safety management, heart complications, substance abuse, irritability and anxiousness, failed relationships, indecisiveness, frequent headaches, and error prone (Kinicki Kreitner, 2009). Conclusively, absenteeism, low morale, high accidents at work, low quality work, overdependence on employees assistance program, and low turnover are associated with stressors which results in improper handing work culture, disrespectfulness to the need to constantly monitor structures in place handling behavior and employee’s interests. In most cases, short term depression may be a challenging motivational factor when it falls under good stress. References Kinicki, A. , Kreitner, R. (2009). By the Same Token

By the Same Token By the Same Token By the Same Token By Maeve Maddox The word token is used with several meanings. From an Old English verb meaning â€Å"to show,† in the broadest sense a token is â€Å"something that serves to indicate a fact; a sign or a symbol.† The sign could be miraculous or merely evidence of something:    I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. Genesis, 9:13, KJV God granted these holy men [the 100 fed miraculously by Elisha] a gracious token that the famine had lifted The retiring employee received a watch as a token of the company’s appreciation. As a physical object, a token may be a metal or plastic disk that serves to show that money has been paid for transportation or admission (e.g., a bus token). Board games like Monopoly include tokens used in play. The expression â€Å"by the same token† means â€Å"for the same reason† or â€Å"in the same way.† Here are two correct examples of its use: there was little evidence to substantiate the gossip and, by the same token, there was little to disprove it –example, OxfordDictionaries because his mind is flexible it responds quickly †¦ to what is before it, and by the same token it can call up from within a host of appropriate ideas example, Merriam-Webster As is happening to many venerable expressions in this age of limited reading of traditional literature, â€Å"by the same token† is being altered by speakers who aren’t quite sure how to use it: However at the same token, this same conversation could apply to couples who go through that process together In the same token, it cannot disregard basic issues of translation theory. Does my body include the oxygen I am about to inhale and, on the same token, should I include the air I am about to exhale? Not only is the preposition by being incorrectly replaced by at, in or on, the meaning is being lost: I dont dislike dogs (or other animals), but by the same token, I dont want them in my house. Here the meaning seems to be â€Å"on the other hand.† With a documentation date of 1463, â€Å"by the same token† has had a good run in English. If you choose to take some of these quizzes for your diagnostic test, know that you won’t be able to get an accurate score estimate from them since their format is so different from the format of the actual ACT.Instead, you can use the quizzes to get a general idea of the areas where you’re doing well and where you need to study more. How Should You Take an ACT Diagnostic Test? When you take your ACT diagnostic exam, it’s crucial to mimic real testing conditions as closely as possible so that you can get the most accurate score from your diagnostic. If you give yourself more breaks or time than you’d get on the real test, your diagnostic test results won’t be as useful. Here are the main rules you should follow when taking your diagnostic: Take the test with pencil and paper (You’ll be taking the real ACT this way, so we don’t recommend taking your ACT diagnostic online.) Take the test all in one sitting Keep strict timing for each section (don’t give yourself even one minute extra to complete a section!) Use only the breaks you’d get on the official exam (10 minutes after the Math section and 5 minutes before the Writing section if you’re taking it) Minimize distractions (no music, TV, people talking in the room, etc.) For a more in-depth look at the best way to take ACT practice tests, check out our guide specifically on the topic. How Should You Analyze Your ACT Diagnostic Test Results? Big Picture Questions After you’ve taken your diagnostic test, you’ll need to break down your test results to understand exactly what you need to work on and where you can improve. Here are three of the first questions you should ask yourself. Which Sections Were Your Best? Your Worst? After you’ve looked at your overall score, review your section scores for English, Math, Reading, and Science. How do they compare to each other? Are some section scores significantly higher than others?Students often divide their study time equally between each of the ACT sections or read entire prep books all the way through to make sure they’re learning everything they can. However, if your section scores vary widely, this isn’t the most efficient use of your time. You want to concentrate more study time on the section(s) where you need to make the biggest improvement. So if, say, your Science score is the lowest of your section scores, you’ll want to spend more time studying Science than you would studying for Math, English, or Reading. Which Types of Questions Did You Struggle the Most With? When your review the results of your ACT diagnostic test, you’ll be able to see not only which sections you were stronger or weaker on, but also which question types you struggled with the most. For example, the Science section has three different types of questions. Maybe you did pretty well on Data Representation questions but struggled on the Conflicting Viewpoints questions. The more detailed your analysis is, the more it’ll help you develop a study plan that effectively targets your weaknesses and helps you raise your score. We have guides that explain the different question types you’ll see on each section of the ACT: English, Math, Reading, and Science. Were You Pressed for Time? The ACT is strictly timed, and if you ran out of time on any section of your diagnostic, that’s absolutely something you need to focus on during your studying.Leaving just a few questions blank on each section because you didn’t have time to answer them can have a major impact on your score. The ACT expects you to answer many questions in a limited amount of time, and many students struggle with completing the test within the time limits. If you felt you knew most of the information being tested but just didn’t have the time to answer all the questions, working on your timing skills will be key to improving your ACT score. How Should You Analyze Your ACT Diagnostic Test Results? Nitty Gritty Questions Once you’ve looked at the big picture info you got from your diagnostic, it’s time for a more detailed analysis. To do this, you should go through every question you got wrong (or just guessed on) on your diagnostic ACT and figure out why you answered it incorrectly. For each question you answered incorrectly, think about why you got it wrong. There are generally four reasons people make mistakes on exams: Time Issue: You didn’t have enough time to answer the question. Question Comprehension Issue: You knew the information needed to correctly solve the question, but the question was too complicated, you weren’t sure what exactly was being asked, or you were tricked by the question. Procedural/Content Issue: You weren’t sure how to solve a question, or you didn’t have the background knowledge needed to solve it. Careless Error: You knew how to solve the question, but you made a silly mistake that caused you to choose the wrong answer. We give detailed explanations for how to overcome each of these issues in our guide to going over ACT questions you got wrong, but below are key solutions for each of the four issues. Time Issue To get a better handle of the ACT’s timing and maximize the amount of time you get on each section, there are several techniques to try.First, don’t get stuck on a single question and waste so much time on it you don’t have a chance to answer other questions. If you’ve stared at a question for 60 seconds and have no idea how to solve it, skip it and move on. You can always come back to it at the end of the section if you have more time.Second, for many questions, you’ll see some questions that are obviously incorrect. Do yourself a time-saving favor and cross these off in your booklet immediately. The faster you can eliminate wrong answer choices, the faster you can solve for the correct answer. Finally, one of the best ways to get faster on the ACT is to take lots of practice tests. By doing so you’ll become more familiar with the test and know what to expect and what shortcuts you can use to answer questions. Question Comprehension Issue This issue is especially common with people who read questions quickly in hopes of saving time. Even though you’ll be pressed for time on the ACT, spending an extra few seconds to figure out exactly what a question is asking you is well worth your time. Many students underline key parts of a question to make sure they’re not missing any important information when they read it.This can be particularly helpful for Reading and Science questions, where you’ll need to get your information from long passages. Knowing exactly what you’re looking for can help you save time and ensure you’re looking for the right information. Procedural/Comprehension Issue Both of these issues can be solved by building up your knowledge of what the ACT tests and how its questions are worded. For procedural problems, the best way to improve is to answer lot of practice questions so you become familiar with what ACT questions look like. ACT prep books can also give you insight into how to solve questions. For comprehension issues, you can brush up on the content the ACT tests by using class notes, textbooks on the material, or an ACT prep book. Careless Error In order to stop making careless errors, you need to figure out what’s causing them in the first place. Were you pressed for time? Then improving your time management skills will help.Did you get tripped up by one of the ACT’s common tricks, like only solving for x when you were supposed to solve for 2x? Reading prep books to learn common tricks can help you avoid making those mistakes again.Leaving yourself a few minutes at the end of each ACT section to go over your answers can also help you catch any careless mistakes you may have made. 6 Steps to Creating the Best ACT Prep Plan for You After you’ve taken your ACT diagnostic test and reviewed your results, you can use that information to create your ACT study plan. Below are the six steps to follow to create a study plan that’ll help you strengthen your weaknesses and get the ACT score you’re aiming for. #1: Set an ACT Goal Score Once you have the results from your ACT diagnostic, you need to set a target score so you know what your goal is when you take the actual ACT.To set a target score, first make a list of the colleges you want to apply to. Then find the average ACT scores of admitted students for each of those schools. (This info is usually available on each school’s class profile.)Find the highest average ACT score on your list. That's your goal score because reaching it will give you a good shot at getting into each of your potential schools. Once you have your goal score, compare it to your diagnostic score. Are they close? Far apart? Are there certain sections where you met your goal score but others where you didn’t?Having this info will help you determine your actions for the rest of the steps in your study plan. #2: Figure Out How Long You Need to Study How much you need to study for the ACT depends on the difference between your diagnostic test results and your goal score. Here are our estimates for the total number of hours you'll need to prep based on the ACT score improvement you want: Composite ACT Points You Want to Improve Hours of Study Needed 0-1 points 10 hours 1-2 points 20 hours 2-4 points 40 hours 4-6 points 80 hours 6-9 points 150+ hours Once you know how long you plan on studying, you can decide how many hours you want to study a week and work backwards to figure out how many weeks/months you’ll need to prepare and when you should take the ACT. #3: Get High-Quality Study Resources In order to have a great study plan, you’re going to need to use the best study materials out there. We’ve already discussed the importance of using official practice tests when you study for the ACT. Unofficial practice tests can sometimes vary greatly from the real exam, which means you’ll be taking tests that don’t help or, worse, prepare you for the wrong material. Always use official practice ACTs when you can. A prep book can also be one of the most useful tools for your ACT studying. They can be especially helpful at explaining tricky concepts and breaking down how to solve different types of ACT problems.Check out our guide to the top ACT prep books to learn which are the best prep books out there. #4: Focus on Your Weaknesses As we discussed above, it’s important for you to identify your weak areas and prioritize strengthening them. Once you know which subjects or question types you want to improve in, there are several ways to go about doing this: Reviewing content: either in a prep book or school notes Answer practice questions Asking for help if needed: If you’ve read through all your relevant notes on a subject, you may want to try asking a classmate who is also taking the ACT for help or look into getting a tutor. #5: Take Regular Practice ACTs Your ACT diagnostic isn’t the only practice test you should take before exam day. Regular practice tests will help you track your progress and get more familiar with the exam.We recommend taking three to six full-length practice ACTs before test day. There are currently five official practice ACTs available for free, so definitely make use of them. #6: Regularly Check Your Progress As you study for the ACT, you should regularly step back and analyze how things are going. Are you making the progress you’re wanting? If not, what do you think you should change about your study plan? Are you able to get in the number of study hours you want to? Where are you still struggling? How can you fix that issue? This is a key step to follow because if something’s not working, you’re not going to see the improvements you want, no matter how often you keep doing it.If you’re stuck you might consider looking at tutors or reading our list of the 18 best tips for the ACT to get some new study ideas. Young goodman brown Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Young goodman brown - Research Paper Example Hawthorne writes the masterpiece with a pool of symbols that promotes the understanding of the story. Symbolism is used to depict Goodman’s experience in and out of the forest enhancing the understanding of the concept of good and evil. The story begins with an ironical situation where Goodman leaves his three months’ old married wife for something not known deep in the forest. He is very persuasive despite his wife’s plea that he should not go. This aspect is symbolic of the drive that entices humans to pursue their hearts’ desires despite the counsel they get from people who care about them. Leaving ‘Faith’ for the wild symbolically represents a situation where a person will depart from good to pursue something not certain. In the case of Goodman, an evil venture. The forest life presents very unnatural situations, just like the way evil powers manifests supernaturally to men. The forest is a place for the wild. It has been used as an expres sion of the horrible occurrences that happens in there. The first instance he meets an older man who resembles him completely. The appearance of this man symbolises the decision to pursue evil at the age when he already knows how to do good. The resemblance depicts that evil is available among all men including to Goodman. He sees it as a place of no good. He echoes the dominant point of view of seventeenth-century Puritans, who believed that the wild world was something to fear and then dominate (Ezghoul and Zuraika 2). It is symbolic that despite being in the midst of evil Goodman is able to recognise the faith he had always upheld, when he says, â€Å"We are a people of prayer, and good works to boot, and abide no such wickedness† (Hawthorne 1123). This statement is symbolic of the knowledge of doing well that Goodman had been exposed to in his life. The names of the characters in the story are full of hidden meaning. The main character, Goodman, is a symbol that depicts a man who knows how to do good and has the capability to do good, but ironically the symbol reveals that it is good people who end up to committing evil. Apart from him, his wife is also symbolic. Faith had married good man for only three months before he decides to take a walk into the forest at night. She symbolises the belief that Goodman had been upholding but now makes a decision to abandon them. Her name is symbolic of good, Faith is an advantage to him, but he leaves it for unknown results. The devil’s stuff is a very symbolic figure that is used to show the combination of the devil and evil. Just like the biblical deception Eve was exposed to, Goodman takes the staff in order to travel faster but this result into further frustrations. This demonstrates the extent to which humans lose their innocence and faith to curiosity and selfish desires (Fogle 209).. Serpent, further symbolises the ability of evil powers to harm rather than benefit an individual, encircled the stu ff. Because of the inherent human weakness and the inability to fight spiritual aspects physically, Goodman ignorantly held the stuff and was pushed by the powers of evil. The serpent is symbolic of the devil and wickedness. The choice to hold the stuff by Goodman symbolises human weakness in taming their desires. The experience in the forest symbolises the effect of engaging in evil. Goodman Brown, like other Puritans, associates the forest with the wild â€Å"Indians† and sees one hiding behind every tree. The real life situation under the influence of the supernatural powers makes Goodman to rethink about his being and the way he perceived fellow human beings and God. The author has framed the story symbolically for the audience to get the image of good and evil painted. The use of night is symbolic of
